You do not need the expansions but the Clan Pack and the Inner Sphere pack are helpful.

Don't worry, you agree to it in the EULA, well not specifically, but you do. And then it installs and runs on your system services constantly, and its almost impossible to remove.

Other than the fact its a poorly designed invasion of your privacy, foisted upon you by Cyberlore, theres nothing to worry about.

Skip the MechPaks, its still easy to enjoy the game.

I do have the Clan Mech Pak, but I'm using the CD to scrape dog poo offa my patio. At least it does a good job of that.
